It's Metal Monday again everyone! If you have not seen this series before, every Monday I will be sharing a metal track that I believe resonates with our individual professional journeys and to help those of us who struggle to get going on Monday mornings. (Plus, I get to share some of my favorite metal music with you all!)

I’m in Canada! My fiance is a born citizen of Canada, so I visit this beautiful country often. I decided to drive up on Sunday, then spent some time unwinding, unpacking, and just enjoying their company. As is becoming tradition, I take comfort in the quiet and peacefulness of nighttimer, so I’m up at 1am to start putting this article together.

I originally asked my fiance to help me coming up with some topics for the week and we had settled on failure, struggle, and reflection. However, I ended up going a different path that I feel is more relatable to me and my current struggles. As soon as I changed the topic this week to talk about mental health, I immediately knew it would be an I Prevail song. I originally was going to pick the song Breaking Down from their Trauma album, but Deep End always hits me, as does the song Let Me Be Sad which is also from the Trauma album. (I think that album might talk about trauma or something.) This isn’t a light song, and it’s not a light topic, but we’re talking about mental health, specifically Depression, Isolation, and Struggle. It’s also not very heavy on the instrumentals, but the topic is very heavy.

Questions to Inspire Your Journey

As you read through this article, think about how you can apply these themes to your personal and/or professional life, no matter your position or role, and feel free to share your thoughts in the comments on the LinkedIn post! Here are some questions to get you started:

  1. How do you cope with feelings of isolation or loneliness in your personal life? Are there strategies you use to reconnect with others or find support?

  2. In your professional life, how do you manage the mental burden of work-related stress? What techniques do you use to maintain a healthy work-life balance?

  3. Have you ever felt like you were carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders? How did you address these feelings and what steps did you take to lighten the load?

  4. How do you handle situations where you feel overwhelmed or trapped in your job? What actions can you take to regain control and find a sense of purpose in your work?

  5. How do you communicate your struggles to others, whether in your personal or professional life? What support systems do you have in place to help you through tough times?

Topic: Depression

Lyrics:

So I made friends with all my demons

Let 'em sink their teeth in

Got used to the feeling of letting it go

So give me something to believe in

Or throw me in the deep end

It all feels the same with your eyes closed

In "Deep End," the lyrics "So I made friends with all my demons, let 'em sink their teeth in" highlight the struggle of accepting and dealing with inner demons. The song reflects the feeling of being overwhelmed by depression and the desperate need for something to believe in. It captures the sense of hopelessness and the challenge of finding motivation when everything feels the same. This resonates with anyone who has felt the weight of depression in their personal or professional life, struggling to find a way out and seeking a glimmer of hope to hold onto. It's a reminder that even in the darkest times, acknowledging our struggles is the first step towards healing.

Topic: Isolation

Lyrics:

If you had it all would it be enough?

Can you find your way and still be lost?

I write songs about being someone else

That say "Fuck the world" but not "I need help"

The lyrics "If you had it all would it be enough? Can you find your way and still be lost?" express the feeling of having everything but still feeling lost and disconnected. The song delves into the theme of isolation, emphasizing the difficulty of reaching out for help. It portrays the internal conflict of wanting to appear strong while struggling with the need for support. This can be particularly relatable in a professional setting, where the pressure to succeed and maintain a facade of competence can lead to feelings of isolation. It's a powerful reminder that it's okay to ask for help and that true strength lies in acknowledging our vulnerabilities.

Topic: Struggle

Lyrics:

'Cause everything is changin', memories are fadin'

Tell me that I'm fucked up

I wanna hear you say it (say it)

All my fears are slowly rearranging

Pushed them all aside but

I can feel them waiting

In the lyrics "'Cause everything is changin', memories are fadin'," the song addresses the ongoing battle with fears and the struggle to move forward. It reflects the constant changes and pressures that can lead to feelings of struggle and uncertainty. The song captures the challenge of confronting and managing fears, highlighting the resilience needed to keep pushing through despite obstacles. This theme is universally relatable, as everyone faces moments of struggle in their personal and professional lives. It's a testament to the human spirit's ability to endure and overcome, reminding us that even when things seem insurmountable, we have the strength to persevere.

As we navigate our personal and professional lives, it's crucial to acknowledge the mental health challenges we face, whether it's depression, isolation, or struggle. "Deep End" by I Prevail serves as a reminder that these feelings are real and valid, and that we are not alone in experiencing them. By reflecting on the lyrics and themes of this song, we can find solace in knowing that others share similar battles and that there is strength in vulnerability. It's important to reach out for support, whether from friends, family, or colleagues, and to take proactive steps towards mental wellbeing.

In our professional lives, the pressures and demands can often exacerbate feelings of stress and isolation. However, by fostering a supportive work environment and encouraging open conversations about mental health, we can create a culture where everyone feels valued and understood. Remember, it's okay to ask for help and to take time for self care. By addressing our mental health head on, we can build resilience and find the strength to overcome any challenges that come our way. Let's use this Metal Monday as a reminder to prioritize our mental health and support one another in our journeys.

Stay tuned for next week's Metal Monday! Until then, keep rocking and stay strong!
